Faron Young and Marty Robbins newsletter — 18 June 2008

This is a periodic newsletter about “Live Fast, Love Hard: The Faron Young Story,” published last year by the University of Illinois Press, as well as progress on writing “Twentieth Century Drifter: The Life of Marty Robbins.” Here’s the link to my online interview with Norm Goldman, publisher and editor of Bookpleasures.com: http://tinyurl.com/3zteyj

JODY NIX IN WASHINGTON DC
Jody Nix and the Texas Cowboys are bringing western swing music to Washington D.C. (If it’s here already, I haven’t found it.) They will be one of the groups at the 2008 Smithsonian Folklife Festival, in the segment called “Texas: A Celebration of Music, Food, and Wine.” They’ll have shows five days in a row, 25-29 June, and here’s the schedule: http://www.folklife.si.edu/festival/2008/Texas/index.html. On the first day, which is Jody’s birthday, they’ll also be performing at the Kennedy Center. I’ve been listening to Jody’s music on XM-13 Radio for almost a year, and I’m excited to finally see him in person.

Jean Earle in the UK says, “Just reading Faron’s book again…..I may have missed something on my first reading!!! One thing we spoke of, a long time ago…was that you asked Ferlin if he would like to add something to your book? and he told you he was saving his stories for HIS book. Knowing how great friends they were, I am sure there must be LOTS of Faron / Ferlin tales that would be most interesting for their fans to read. . . . We have a copy of ‘Country Music Holiday’ and they made great music together in that film.”

Orlando Valdez writes, “I am a huge fan of Marty Robbins. I perform his songs when I sing, and those songs are always well received. I am eagerly awaiting the publication of your biography of Marty.”

Gary Corsair, senior writer at The Villages Daily Sun in Lake County, Florida, says, “I’m writing a feature series about the 1955 Hank Snow All-Star Jamboree Florida tour Faron Young was part of. I’m looking for memories, mementoes and photos.” He adds, “You’re a heck of a writer. I finished Live Fast, Love Hard in 4 days. Excellent!”
